In Alto Piemonte, on the slopes of the Monte Rosa, the lands were forged by fire and smoothed by water. Here Nebbiolo takes on its most sublime expression.

The summit

It has always been an allusion to the goal, difficult to reach and for this reason so coveted. The focus of the Pasquero Elia family has always been to be great interpreters of Nebbiolo.

The experience with Nebbiolo has been cultivated for centuries in the Pasquero Elia and Bianchi families, now we are ready to expand our sensitivity to new heights. Recent experience has brought the Pasquero Elia family to the slopes of the Alps. Increasingly uncertain, arid and hot climates have pushed us towards a cooler and rainier area. To preserve what has always been a symbol of a great wine of terroir: the subtle balance between complexity and finesse.

We imagine Nebbiolo as a large mountain, one of the most imposing that can be faced. It can be climbed from several sides, but the summit remains the same. When you reach it: Nebbiolo can give wines as deep as cliffs, as fresh as the lashes of wind, but above all thrilling in their personality. We believe that after all, everyone can really be emotional from the top of a mountain, in the same way a great Nebbiolo can excite.

The slope

The ascent along the slope is the most exciting part of the trip. It is the fine interaction between the experience in reading the territory and the knowledge of our potential and our limits.

Immersed in the woods, vineyards surrounded by trees and unspoiled nature demand respect. This is intertwined with the role of the farmer, that of being in balance between the desired order and the disorder generated by nature. Thus, manifesting this tension in the authenticity of the harvested fruit.

The processing is designed to preserve this tension, traditional winemaking methods, minimal intervention and great care, to express the precision of these terroirs. The earliest wines kept in cement with their own finest yeasts. Those suitable for aging in barrels as per tradition. A tradition that does not want to present itself as pure preservation of the past, but in a constant imperceptible movement.

The terroir

The terroir of this area is basically an expression of several elements:

  • The imposing Alpine chain of the Rosa able to protect and influence the climate in contrast with the plain below.
  • The soil mainly generated by the erosion and sedimentation of an ancient Supervolcano and the surrounding Alps.
  • The Sesia, a river that has eroded and constantly influences the territory and the surrounding climate.
  • Acidic soils with thin topsoil.

In Gattinara, the vineyards grow among soils originating 280 million years ago. Among porphyries with incursions of granite, limestone, quartzite, schist, sandstone, sand and vulcanites.

In Ghemme and Sizzano, on the other hand, they are lands located on a more recent plateau formed 475 and 360 thousand years ago, composed of pebbles resulting from the dismantling of the Alpine chain and amalgamated by clays from these ancient alluviums.

Monte - Rosa

Sublime is the tension between wonder and terror. This is the emotion that has guided our steps in these lands and inspired J.M.W. Turner when he traveled through the Alps to depict its landscapes and phenomena. These peaks and the untamed nature are what captivated him during his journeys.

So what better representation than a manifestation of this emotion. If the sublime could be mediated by taste and smell, it would be what we would aspire to.

VITICULTURE:

The new vineyard management aims to restore balance in the vineyard through a thoughtful intervention to preserve the dynamics of the vine-soil-microfauna relationship, already guaranteed by the great biodiversity that characterizes the vineyard areas in the Vercelli and Novara regions. Nebbiolo grapes are harvested before full ripeness from mixed origins, from soils composed of porphyry or alluvial soils of volcanic and alpine origin. Located at altitudes between 300 and 380 meters. From vineyards of at least 20 years old.

VINIFICATION:

The goal is to craft a truly territorial wine, with fermentation in cement tanks and aging in cement with fine lees for 6 months. The aim is to develop the complexity of Nebbiolo while balancing the freshness of these pseudo-alpine wines. Produced: 2,300 bottles

The roots

The Bianchi family is an intrinsic part of the history of Alto Piemonte wines. Giuseppe Bianchi, born in 1904, stated that his grandfather gave Senator Giovannetti some of his own bottles later commented by Cavour: … I naively confess that your excellent wine from Sizzano almost convinced me of the possibility of making fine wines in Piedmont. [This wine possesses in a high degree, that which is valuable to the wines of France, and generally lacks the bouquet in our own.] The bouquet of Sizzano does not resemble that of Bordeaux, but the bouquet of Burgundy, which for certain places enjoys the first fruits of all the wines of France… In 1876 it began bottling regularly and between the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s it enjoyed the prestige that northern Piedmont knew in Italy at the time. Generations followed one another and the great turning point came with Giuseppe Bianchi. Hard worker and visionary. In the village it was said that “On the hill wanders the devil who works in the vineyard at night”* But the provost soon revealed the nature of the demon, who was none other than Giuseppe Bianchi who, with the torch hanging, wasted no time. His vision led the company to renew itself and bet on the various denominations of the area and on the beauty of the Nebbiolo variety of these terroirs. Today his daughter Eva with her sons Paolo and Roberto have decided to give light to this historic family project by joining another historic Piedmontese wine family: the Pasquero Elia family.

Pasquero Elia Family
They have been running the Paitin company for 8 generations and have made Barbaresco di Serraboella their flag. From 1796 to today they have never abandoned the idea that Barbaresco is one of the finest wines and lands of the Belpaese. This opportunity to express the Nebbiolo of different territories was a unique and unmissable opportunity. The savoir-faire acquired combined with different climates and soils will allow this brand to aim for even more refined expressions of Nebbiolo.

The two families together have centuries of history and in a changing world, this knowledge is invaluable. Given the new environmental and cultural horizons, both families think that together they can take this vine to new peaks. Often the answer we expect in the future is written in the pages of the past.

The farm has 10 hectares of land available between the hills of Sizzano, Ghemme and Gattinara. Luca, Giovanni, Silvano Pasquero Elia assisted by Bianchi Eva and her son Paolo together with some young people from the Sesia hills and the winery in Neive are the people behind this reborn company.
